The Story of the Ampelographic Garden Steyer
The Ampelographic Garden was planted for the purpose of collecting various varieties of vines from all over the world
The Ampelographic Garden Steyer is situated on Plitvički Vrh, near the state road Maribor-Gornja Radgona. It was first planted in 1999 with numerous selections and clones of various grapevine varieties. A total of 128 different varieties and clones were planted, including both domestic and foreign varieties. Among the Slovenian varieties, the fragrant, ranina, ranfol, žlahtnina, škrlet, zelen, vitovska grganja, and polšakica stand out. Some interesting German varieties were also planted, such as cabernet mitos, dunkelfelder, and dakapo.
Ampelographic wine
In 2001, the first wine from the Steyer Ampelographic Garden was produced, named Ampelographic White and Ampelographic Red. The wine, which was carefully matured, was considered by wine experts to be of exceptional quality and interesting to taste.
Art and Wine
In 2016, the renovated Steyer estate hosted its first painting colony, an event we aim to hold every other year. The artworks created during this event are used for wine labels for blended wines from the ampelographic garden, named VINO PRIJATELJSTVA (Wine of Friendship). The labels feature works by renowned artists such as Bogdan Čobal, Dr. Matjaž Duh, Viktor Šest, and Tatjana Mijatovič.
Garden Renovation and Expansion
Recognizing that every vineyard has its lifespan, we decided to replant and redesign the ampelographic garden. With support from the LAS Prlekija grant, we carried out a renovation project and continue to enhance the garden with new varieties, producing high-quality wine aimed at promoting and strengthening wine culture and friendly relations.
Current State and Experience
The garden now includes around 250 grape varieties and is one of the largest in Slovenia. The vineyard dedicated to planting various varieties covers approximately 0.4 hectares, while the total vineyard area on the Steyer estate is 20 hectares. The ampelographic garden project is based on the idea of offering an authentic experience in the wine-growing region of Podravje, in the Štajerska district, within the Ščavniška Valley and the Apače Plain, near the Slovenian-Austrian border by the river Mura. The emphasis is on creating an emotional and lasting connection between the wine creator and its enjoyer, incorporating sustainability, heritage, family tradition, authentic environment, local cuisine, wine, art, and the use of new technologies.
Tourism and Education
For modern tourists, wine enthusiasts, food lovers, and wine connoisseurs, visiting the ampelographic garden provides an authentic experience and connection with the environment from which the wine originates. For us it allows us to nurture an emotional connection with our guests and customers.
The ampelographic vineyard contributes to diversifying the tourist offerings, complementing our primary activity of producing quality wines. We recognize that today’s wine drinkers are increasingly aware and curious about new knowledge and interesting facts in this field, and we can offer them a walk through the vineyard, where they can learn a lot about the varieties that grow throughout Europe.
